The Vision

A modern, year-round pool for Cañon City built for all ages, all seasons, and the next 50+ years.

For decades, the R.C. Icabone Pool was a summer staple in Cañon City. Now, thanks to strong community support and collaboration between the City of Cañon City, Cañon City Recreation District, Cañon City Schools, and our residents, we have the opportunity to replace it with a year-round aquatic facility that will serve our community for generations.

Where It Will Be

The new pool will be built where the old R.C. Icabone pool is currently located, in the heart of our community at 12th and College, right next to the high school. The City will vacate a section of 12th Street to connect the site, and the school district is donating land in front of the high school for much-needed parking.

The design includes a new bus lane for the high school, which will also help ease traffic flow on College Avenue. This will provide much-needed improvements to the daily drop-off experience for students and parents.

The Concept

The proposed design includes one indoor competition pool and one outdoor leisure pool, along with modern bathhouses, mechanical rooms, and community-friendly amenities. While this will be a beautiful, community pool complex, it is designed to be a standard community facility, not a water park.

Why Year-Round?

When asked during the pool feasibility study, the community’s answer was clear:

  • Better return on investment – 12 months of use instead of just 3.

  • Longer lifespan – outdoor pools last 30–40 years, indoor pools can serve for 50–100 years.

  • More programs for more people – swim lessons, lap swimming, competitive swim teams, senior fitness, adult classes, and open swim.

  • Potential for warm-water therapy – expanding wellness options for all ages.
